A Great Day in Harlem (DVD)
Jean Bach

This is an Academy Award nominated documentary released in 1995, narrated by Quincy Jones and produced by Jean Back. It was inspired by the famous photograph of the same name by Art Kane. This acclaimed and legenday photo was made in 1958 on a street in Harlem, New York. It contained legendary musicians from the Golden Age of Jazz who assembled very early one morning for what was supposed to be a photo shoot for Esquire Magazine.

This documentary takes you behind the scenes of this legendary photograph. It features interviews and features with jazz legends who were present that day such as Art Farmer, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakely, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver, Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk, Count Basie, Coleman Hawkins and photographer Art Kane. You will be amazed at the rare footage of some of these jazz musicians performing and clips from a home movie made of Art Kane’s historic photo being taken. You’ll also enjoy some lighter moments when you learn more about some neighborhood kids who sneaked into the photo as well.

Overall, this is a fantastic film all about the Evolution of Jazz and the Golden Age of Jazz. Learn more about the people and events that shaped this movement.
